Regardless, I thought I would share this brief composition that I’m roughing out at the moment. I used sounds recorded late at night in my neighborhood, and then some vocoder playing. It’s the first audio piece I’ve done with no specific visuals in mind for quite some time. I’m sure I can polish it up, but I thought I’d give you a listen. I’m just wired tonight and feeling creative.

It features my own sound work and a collaboration with DCLXVI. Inspired by American Idol losers, I also have made it my goal to embarass myself more often. And thus, I have done my own cover of Megacolon by Fischerspooner, in honor of people with bowel problems everywhere.

Included in the show:

“Bacon Bits” by Strepsata, originally composed for one of Usama and my collaborations called “Portrait”

background music: “Bismoc UX” by Majongg

Strepsata’s cover of “Magacolon” by Fischerspooner

background music: “Dalonah”

Flesh pt. 1, from Flesh by DCLXVI, featuring the short story “Melanie’s Freak,” by Strepsata

My advice: Don’t toke and cast. I try to read to you, and play some music. Not the strongest podcast, but it includes music given to me by a cab driver, and other super good music which makes it all worth it. Really.

Included in the show:

Noisy Daughter Theme No.1 by Strepsata

For the curious - podcasts WILL resume sometime this month.

Is that what the “betting” comment was all about? Are you betting I’ll never come back? Who can blame you - I work in such erratic bursts. I keep my own pace, and sometimes it lags a bit much to hold an audience. But hey, this is not my job, it’s one of many many on-going projects which some might consider hobbies. So I resolve to stop feeling guilty about it.

Pending confirmation, I will be collaborating with the sacredwhore, m. gira on at least one podcast while she visits Chicago. Perhaps she will become an official noisy daughter? And I expect to keep my promise and interview artist Gregory Jacobsen as well.

I have been unmotivated to bring my gear to parties and such (and there have been times when I sorely regret it), but I have been working on my own theme song.

I apologize for not recording a podcast recently. I’ve been dealing with family visits, and hosting out-of-town realtives, as one of my family members has been in the hospital for the last few weeks. It’s been a rough time.

The stress led me toward illness, so I’ve been quite under the weather. I hate taking anti-biotics. On top of it all I just found out that I lost an old friend to AIDS.

I want to take this opportunity to make a PSA. Heroine is the reason that my 28-year-old relative went through complicated heart surgery and has suffered from liver and kidney falure. The combination of Hepatitis C and bacteria introduced into his blood almost killed him. He will be disabled for the rest of his short life. It may have been the reason my 32 year old childhood friend caught a deadly virus. I know that I always promote the virtue of being a criminal in these repressive times. But I want to note that I consider heroine use outside of the realm of honorable crime. It sickens me. It is pointless and stupid self-destruction. Period.

Interview with Razi Barakat a.k.a. Boy From Brazil and VJ Safy Sniper

At long last I got around to editing this podcast from last week. It’s a long and progressively fun and interesting interview with two fine gentlemen from Berlin, namely Razi Barakat (Boy From Brazil) and VJ Safy Sniper. They stayed with us for a few days and partied with us at the Z Film Festival. Safy was armed with a video camera the entire time, so I managed to get the audio from a few of his clips.

Included in the show:

“Bedazzled” - my favorite selection from Razi’s collection. From a 1967 movie by the same name.

Razi and Safy talk about their work, their U.S. tour, cultural exchange, media recycling, performing in Israel and Palestine, and their vision of the future.

Audio clips from the last Z Film Festival as well as the party that raged til dawn.

“I Need a New Tape” by Bongwater.

My shows are taking a bit longer because I’ve been dealing with some personal and family criseeeeez. Yeah, it’s been a rough time. So bare with me for a bit… Painter and performer Gregory Jacobsen will be joining me for a podcast soon.

Saturday night at the Z Film Festival was amazing! We had a huge crowd, plenty of booze, and some great short movies. Afterward, Panicsville gave an excellent performance, and then VJ Sniper took over with his hypnotic loops and spasms of pop culture recycled. We ended the night with Boy From Brazil - a great rock performance which had us bumping and grinding - particularly the girls. It all ended ubruptly when filmmaker John Goras (of Chirpy fame) got into the act, wrestling playfully and drunkenly with Razi (Boy From Brazil), knocking over equipment and pulling the plug.

After the festival came to an end we packed up and moved on to our loft for an after-party peppered with make-out sessions (Both Laura, and our nd model Celina are very good kissers, by the way) and what Safy (VJ Sniper) called “dueling monologues.” Safy recorded the whole scene on his cool little video camera, and I will be using the audio in my next podast.

The next day filmmkaer Caveh Zahedi (see our Zine section) came by for a light dinner. I love talking with Caveh. He has no pretentions. In a way, to know his movies is to know him. He’s a very open guy.

The Berliners (Safy and Razi) stayed with us for a few days at the loft, and on their last night we recorded a very good, though sleepy, interview. They have a lot of good things to say, and I will put this up within the next few days.

Now, as I recover from the long weekend, and get myself back into the grind (with a quick break for ANTM), I wish you a happy evening.

The last podcast, if you missed it, was this podcast. It’s just me and my hubby rambling about the FBI’s new “obscenity squad” and some other stuff… I don’t have the patience for listing show notes right now. One Iraqi tells us what’s really going on in Baghdad these days…

Included in the show:

“Relax” by Bobby Conn

My husband’s cousin, T, called from Amman Jordan. He’s on vacation from the horrid conditions in Baghdad, Iraq and gives us a mental picture of one possible future of his country. He makes a statement to any Americans who care to listen. This, and some even more moving parts of the conversation, will be included in the documentary NICE BOMBS.

“Ordinary Violence” by Bobby Conn

This show took priority over my naked drunken night with the neighbors. But I’ll put that podcast up soon. It is my pleasure to help provide a bridge between here and there.

Heaven turns five this year.

That is, Wicker Park’s Heaven Gallery will celebrate its fifth birthday this month, with a special anniversary reception this Saturday, from 6-11 p.m.

Founder and director David Dobie sees the occasion as a turning point for the gallery, a shift in tone that’s taken place over the past few years, he says.

The not-for-profit gallery will continue to champion the work of “new and emerging artists,” Dobie says, but he’s distancing himself from elements that initially put Heaven on the map–notably U—- A——-’s racy Z Film Festival.

“It was just kind of a natural progression,” says Dobie. “I’ve been trying to refine our scope and how we present ourselves. I’ve been weaning out certain elements, bands and . . . moving more towards a `rated G’-type experience.”

When Heaven first opened in 1999, it hosted everything from fashion shows to concerts and film festivals.

“I didn’t really have a plan or an initial expectation when I went into this,” Dobie says. “We had parties that were out of control and a mess. I hate parties now, I just want a nice place and to have good art shows.”

Dobie intends to “sell more art, represent more artists,” as well as become more involved in the community, possibly offering free piano lessons to children in the neighborhood in the future, he says. The gallery will still host 11 exhibitions a year, however, with film screenings and local music performances.

Saturday’s show, which runs through Sept. 17, will be a bit of a retrospective, with pieces from Dobie’s personal collection and archival bits of Heaven history, including photos and ephemera submitted by gallery friends and patrons…

So there you have it.

Down with Heaven, Up with Nihilist as the place to see work for grown-ups.

I’m working on my short list of well-known artists who would not be allowed to show/speak/screen at Heaven Gallery:

Catherine Breillat

“All art is Erotic.”
Adolf Loos, 1908

More about the Rating System

If you have artists/filmmakers/writers to add to the list of those who would not be able to exhibit at the Heaven Gallery because their work may not be suitable for children (not-G-rated), please add them here. I’m sending the final list to the gallery director, evidencing his alienation of a whole world of interesting art.
